Galloway accused of racism after walking out of debate

From politics.co.uk:

By Ian Dunt

George Galloway was accused of racism last night after video emerged of him storming out of a debate because he discovered his opponent was Israeli.

The Respect MP was in Oxford University debating the motion ‘Israel should withdraw immediately from the West Bank’ when Eylon Aslan-Levy, a third-year student, used the word ‘we’ in his defence of Israeli policy

Galloway then interrupted to ask if he was Israeli. When he answered yes, Galloway said: “I have been misled. I don’t debate with Israelis.”

He then stormed out, followed by his wife Putri Gayatri Pertiwi.

Galloway took to Twitter later in the evening to justify his decision.

“No recognition of Israel. No normalisation. Christ Church never informed us the debate would be with an Israeli. Simple,” he wrote.

“Boycott, divestment, sanctions. No playing with Apartheid Israël

“I don’t debate with Israelis or speak to their media. If Israelis want to speak about Palestine they can talk to the PLO [Palestinian Liberation Organisation].”

Galloway recently lost his party leader, Salma Yaqoob, after a controversial defence of Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder facing allegations of sexual assault in Sweden.

AFI gets backing of the “Vicar of Baghdad”

We are delighted to see that Canon Andrew White is supporting the campaign by Anglican Friends of Israel to oppose the endorsement of EAPPI (the Ecumenical Accompaniers Programme in Palestine/Israel) at the forthcoming Synod meeting in York.

Canon Andrew is one of the Church’s most respected and courageous figures.  He is the vicar of St George’s Church in Baghdad, the only Anglican church remaining in Iraq.  His church and staff have been the target of terrorist attacks, killings and kidnappings.  There have also been threats to his own life but he continues his work nevertheless.

Just as importantly, Canon Andrew is the president of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East (FRRME), promoting interfaith relations in the Middle East.

In a statement, Canon Andrew White says:

“As someone who has spent many years living in the Middle East – the Land of the Bible – risking life and limb for peace and who is proud to be a friend of Israelis and Palestinians, Jews, Christians and Muslims, I do hope Synod will reject the motion calling for endorsement of EAPPI.

The motion is unjust and has caused deep pain in the Jewish Community. It neglects the wars against Israel’s very right to exist. It overlooks the persecution of Jews in the Middle East that preceded the establishment of the modern State of Israel. Israel – like all countries – is not perfect, but she sincerely wishes to find peace.

It is not clear why Synod is being asked to adopt a one sided “NAKBA” narrative against Israel while our fellow Christians are dying in Iraq, Sudan, Egypt and Syria. There are many wonderful peace-loving people in the Palestinian territories who are entangled in a conflict
they do not endorse, but the culture of incitement against Jews and Christians as well as the continuing rocket bombardments on Sderot are factors that Synod is being asked to ignore or at best discount.”

A flawed proposal for Synod

Anglican Friends of Israel is uneasy about the Church of England Synod’s proposal to adopt formally the Ecumenical Accompaniers Programme in Palestine and Israel, which we feel would be giving official Anglican support to a skewed narrative of the Middle East Conflict.

AFI’s concerns are outlined in this article on Cranmer’s site.  If you wish to express your concern about this proposal, please download our plea to Synod and write to your Bishop and Synod members.

What do ‘Flotilla Folk’ do?

By Roz Rothstein and Roberta Seid
The Jerusalem Post

When news emerged that “Freedom Flotilla 2” was tied up in Greece for weeks and unable to carry out its plan to breach Israel’s blockade of Hamas-controlled Gaza, a song from Camelot came to mind. Queen Guinevere asks, “What do the simple folk do… when they are blue?” and King Arthur tries to explain.

You have to ask the same question about the Flotilla Folk. Who are they, what do they do and why do they do it? Almost 1,500 of them from around the world planned to fly to Greece, board ships and sail across the Mediterranean to the Gaza Strip in July.

The Flotilla Folk say they are just ordinary folk committed to human rights. But how do ordinary folk have time for the complicated preparations necessary for such an adventure, and for spending weeks in Greece and Gaza? Don’t they have jobs? Or do they get their summers off? And how do ordinary folk have the funds to buy ships, fly to Greece, and spend weeks in hotels waiting to launch the latest publicity stunt they have concocted to smear Israel?

How do they pay for their expensive human rights hobby? Apparently they don’t have to do much preparing. Established radical groups affiliated with Hamas take care of all the details, like the Union of Good (UoG), a coalition of European charities affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, and the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). The ISM has praised Palestinian suicide bombing as “noble,” spent the last 10 years training international volunteers to sabotage Israel’s security, and received official invitations from Hamas to come to Gaza.

South African Charge of Israeli Apartheid Rings Hollow

By Alan M. Dershowitz

A recent speaking tour about Israel brought me to South Africa, following a visit to Norway. Both countries are hostile environments when it comes to the Jewish state. In Norway, the three faculties of the Norwegian universities refused to host me, but student groups broke the boycott against pro-Israel speakers by inviting me to speak. In South Africa, the boycott held and I was precluded from speaking at any university.

The South African boycott against me, as an advocate for Israel, was spearheaded by a sitting judge named Dennis Davis, who authored an op ed in the Cape Times headlined. “Dershowitz is not welcome here!” It was cosigned by a dozen other mainstream lawyers and academics strongly opposed to Israel.
