Pastors Hagee, Jeffress, and the Jews…

by Gerald A. Honigman

There’s been an on-going debate among Jews for quite some time about organizations like Pastor John Hagee’s Christians United For Israel (CUFI).

Pastor Hagee, a prominent Evangelical Minister and tireless friend of Israel, was among those who delivered speeches at the relocation of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. This coincided with President Trump’s recognition of at least part of the holy city as Israel’s capital, on May 14, 2018–the 70th anniversary of Israel reborn.

Millennia of forced conversions, blood libels, massacres, anti-Semitic sermons, expulsions, ghettoization, inquisitions, autos-da-fes, dehumanization, demonization, being labeled “G_d-killers, and so forth–frequently done in the name of the Christian Prince of Peace–have taken their toll. The road to Auschwitz was indeed paved with many of such “religious” stones.

Several friends, after hearing Pastor Hagee’s moving May 14th presentation, once again resumed a discussion we had years ago about Christian support for Jews and Israel. None of us are naïve, and all are seasoned observers of the Jewish and world scenes.

I remember, as a small child, having Christians knocking on my door telling me that my family was going to Hell…in Philadelphia, no less–with half million Jews in its environs…Imagine what it’s like out yonder ways.

Jeffress at Embassy Opening

Yesterday’s terrible events on the border with Gaza, in which 58 were killed and 2,000 injured – events which Haaretz termed a “predictable disaster” – have caused even some strong supporters of Israel to be critical. All of this came on the day that the new US embassy in Jerusalem was officially opened.

Given the dramatic events at the border, the presence of Christian leaders at the embassy opening seems like a small detail in a tumultuous day. However, this should not pass unnoticed. One of those present was Pastor Robert Jeffress, a Southern Baptist who claims that you cannot be saved by being a Jew and who has a history of making derogatory comments about other faiths and the Catholic Church.

Archbishop of Canterbury set to visit Israel

From the Jewish Chronicle:

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is to visit Israel in May, accompanied by his wife Caroline.

The couple spent their honeymoon there and Archbishop Welby is said to be “thrilled” at the prospect of returning.

For security reasons few details of the trip have yet been confirmed, but it is known that the Archbishop will give a major speech on the theme of reconciliation at the Peres Center for Peace in Jaffa.

The visit, expected to last for up to 12 days, will take in Amman, Jerusalem, Haifa and Acre, as well as Bethlehem.

Evangelicals Buying Into Anti-Israel “Fake Theology”

From Breaking Israel News:

Speaking in a keynote message at the annual Proclaiming Justice to the Nations’ (PJTN) International Prayer and Dinner Event for Israel held at the World Center in Orlando, Father Gabriel Naddaf of Nazareth encouraged American Christians to stand with Israel against the BDS – boycott, divest and sanction – movement.

He told the capacity audience of hundreds of PJTN watchmen in attendance that “as one of the few surviving Christians in the Middle-East, I praise God daily for the blessing of being able to call myself an Israeli.” He continued by praising the work of PJTN under Laurie Cardoza-Moore’s leadership, which has spearheaded the campaign to pass anti-BDS legislation across the United States stating, “I call upon anyone in any state who has not already passed an anti-BDS resolution to reach out to PJTN.”
